Los Angeles, the city where dreams come true. Check out Hollywood and tour where celebrities live all in the same day. Foodie central and full of art, this city has something for everyone. Here's some tips on how to explore LA (on a budget!)
Best places to stay:
- Banana Bungalow Hollywood: You can see the Hollywood Sign from the backyard! Located right on Hollywood Blvd so you're in walking distance from the action!
- Freehand Los Angeles: Has a rooftop pool and is located in LA's vibrant downtown neighborhood. Be walking distance to unique attractions and unlimited places to eat.
- HI Los Angeles Santa Monica: Surrounded by amazing cafes and located just a short walk away from Santa Monica Pier this hostel is perfect for the beach bum hipster. When you're ready to explore the rest of LA hope on the expo line a block away from the hostel to Downtown.
Best places to eat:
- In n Out: I'm sure you've scrolled along a white girl's post on Instagram showing off her tasty burger, but don't blame them, this place is delicious. It's a great place if you're looking for a quick, cheap eat.
- Rossblu: Decorated with a mix of modern and chic, enjoy homemade pasta and sit on the patio while enjoying a crisp glass of wine.
- Pizzana: This place is only good if you're hungry and I mean the hungrier the better. Eat some of the best pizza dough you'll have ever tasted and try the shaved artichoke salad.
- HomeState: Enjoy some of the best tacos you'll have in your life with mouth-watering homemade tortilla, hungover or not, you'll scarf these down in no time.
Best things to do:
- Bike from Santa Monica to Venice Beach
- Visit the Bradbury building in Downtown LA
- Explore Beverly Hills and stop at the cupcake ATM
- Visit the stylish "Last Bookstore"
- Observe the rich and famous down Rodeo Drive
- Hike to the Hollywood Sign
- Ride the Ferris Wheel on Santa Monica Pier
- See the stars at the Hollywood Walk of Fame
- Shop till you drop at The Grove
- Enjoy seafood and hang at Malibu Beach
- Photo Op in-front of the street art in Venice
- Eat the prettiest donuts from LA California Donuts
- Bar hop in Downtown
Best day trips:
- Catalina Island: Come here to snorkel or scuba dive - and on your birthday you get a free ferry ride!
- Palm Springs: Visit this desert town if you want some peace and quiet. Lounge by the pool or do some shopping, and don't forget your golf clubs!
- Balboa Island: On this Marina island you'll find multi-million dollar homes, cute boutiques and all the pastries you can eat. Drive an hour or take a 5 minute scenic ferry boat.
- Temecula: If Naples is out of reach for you, this is the next best stop for some wine tasting. Stop by 30 different wineries at your own pace or with a tour guide then end the day with a hot air balloon ride.
- Solvang: Visit this little Dutch town and see architecture replicated from Copenhagen and try some delicious Dutch pastries.
- Joshua Tree National Park: The park’s varied and alien landscapes covered in mostly gnarled, ancient Joshua Trees, looming cacti and giant boulders strewn willy nilly, make for impressive scenery during hikes, bike tours or leisurely drives.
- Salvation Mountain: This trip is for those who either love photo ops (like me) or are interested in things decrepit, forgotten and way off the beaten path.
